Coromandel Express bound for Howrah ( Culcutta or Kolkotta) approaching the Godavari Arch Bridge (bowstring-girder bridge that spans the Godavari river in Rajahmundry, India).

@jmadhavadas wow! 😮 How long is it? is it passed slowly?
avatar
Jayasankar Madhavadas

@ter There are 28 identical spans of twin arches, of parabolic profile, spaced at 5.6 metres (18 ft), each of 97 metres (318 ft) width from centre to centre of the piers with a total length of 2.7 kilometres....

The bridge is designed to run trains at a speed of 160 miles (260 km) per hour and is designed to withstand wind speed of 200 miles (320 km) per hour during cyclonic storms that are anticipated in and around Rajahmundry.

So it maintains the max permissible speed of 110 Kmph .... if there is no speed restriction, it maintains 110 kmph ...

I took this photo with a very early digi cam, hence the low resolution. It was intended to be a capture of front ends under the magnificent roof of Cologne station. I hadn't seen the pidgeon, which is now the focus every time I look at it! An early form of photo bombing perhaps?

@jmadhavadas I remember them well. The lamp lighter would carry one, as he walked the line to light the oil lamps in the semaphore signals. The signalman would have one with a red and a green filter for waving over the balcony, sometimes during fog when the semaphores were not visible.
avatar
Jayasankar Madhavadas

@Astro Same in India too ... in semaphore sections it was there till recently ... Now it is all LED signal torches

I last saw oil lamps in the UK in around 1987 (I left in 1988). This was used as a tail light for a parcels service. The photo is taken at the Paddington station terminus in London.
