This 75m high viaduct, 3rd highest on the line, is one of three on a deviation of the North Island Main Trunk opened in 1981. The Steam Inc Special ran to Taihape for the annual Gumboot Day festivities and is seen returning to Paekakariki near Wellington. |

The Makatote Viaduct at 79m high is the highest steel trestle in use by KiwiRail network trains and was completed in 1908, a year before the 684 Km North Island Main Trunk was completed between Auckland and Wellington. Manson's Siding bridge on North Island Main Trunk is about half way between Auckland and Wellington, near the Raurimu Spiral. The distant volcano is Mt Ruapehu 2797m, normally covered in snow.
