The 850 Class are a heavy-industrial diesel-electric type, built for Australian Iron & Steel's (AIS) Port Kembla steelworks by English Electric Australia (Rocklea, Queensland) in two batches during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Specs as follows: Batch 1: D16-D19 Batch 2: D26-D33 Bo-Bo diesel-electric Weight 89.8 to 93.4 tonnes Length 12.96 metres Gauge 1,435mm Engine: EE SRKT turbocharged 4-stroke 8-cylinder D19 and D28 have been rebuilt AIS later became part of BHP, and BHP later spun of their BHP Steel division and it was sold as BlueScope Steel. Although some of the remaining 850 Class locos are still used at the Port Kembla steelworks, they are now owned by Pacific National. |
