They were built by Morrison Knudsen Australian in 1994 from four
former Australian National 600 Class Goodwin/ALCo locomotives:

The were A1A-A1A units, 11.74 metres long, weighing 56.9 tonnes and
were capable of operating only with ALF Class locomotives. Numbered
BU1-BU4, they were not successful, and were seldom used. They were
originally owned by Morrison Knudsen Australia (MKA) and intended for
lease to Australian National for use with their eight ALF Class
locomotives. However, all four passed to NREC ownership and were
eventually scrapped in 2009. BU2 was in MKA ownership when
photographed.
