Over the 117 years old historic 13-Arch bridge of Thenmala

storyThe first meter gauge passenger train in Kollam - Sengottai route was inaugurated on July 1, 1904 by Maharaja of Travancore, H R H Sree Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, from Kollam with 21 gun salute. Survey started in 1888 for this route and completed by 1902. It was built jointly by State of Travancore, Madras Presidency and South Indian Railway company. Gauge conversion of Kollam–Sengottai Railway line began in 1998 and got completed by 2018. The 13 Kannara bridge or 13 Arch Bridge (Pathimoonu kannara palam) is a major landmark in this scenic route. The bridge connects two hillocks and stands on thirteen granite pillars each almost a hundred feet tall. Sandwiched by the Kollam-Thirumangalam National Highway on one side and the River Kazhuthurutti on the other, the bridge is 102.72 metres (337.0 ft) long and 5.18 metres (17.0 ft) tall. The original design of the bridge was retained by IR when the bridge was reinforced during broad gauge. I was lucky to capture the first broad gauge run in 2018 too.
