It looks like they paint the side rims of the wheels on the lead unit - Impressive!

Brand new wheels come like this. Eventually they just become dirty and lose the fresh look.

Ah, very good. As Missouri Pacific/Union Pacific units, they never had anything but fresh or rusty steel wheel rims throughout their time in the US.
