NSF No.6 (ex BR no.12071) in the sidings at Abercwmboi.

storyThe British Railways class 11's were an LMSR design being built from 1945-1953. The pre BR built locomotives had LMS 71xx numbers with 12033 to 12044 being originally LMS 7120 to 7131. Then BR allocated 12xxx numbers from 1948 onwards so 12045 to 12138 carried 12xxx numbers from new. This class was one of the few not to be allocated 'D' for diesel numbers under the 1957 renumbering scheme. Quite a few ended up in industrial service as seen in my photograph.
The photo depicts NSF (National Smokless Fuels)No.6 which was ex BR 12071. The loco was withdrawn by BR in 10/1971 and sold in 12/1972 to the NCB (National Coal Board) Coal Products Division which later became NSF Ltd. 12071 spent all its industrial life in South Wales working at Nantgarw Coke Works then Aberaman Phurnacite Plant before being sold for scrap in 1990 to C.F. Booths Ltd. Rotherham. It was
sold again in 1992 to the South Yorks Railway Preservation Society but only as a source of spares and was finally cut up at Coopers Metals Ltd, Sheffield in 06/1995.
