These are the locos that ran the electric suburban trains from Christchurch to port of Lyttleton until 1970 when diesels took over. The suburban trains ceased about 1975 and now only Auckland and Wellington have commuter trains. Ec 7 is sole survivor of six English Electric 888KW locos introduced in 1929 due to smoke problems in the Lyttleton Tunnel.
