This excursion was part of positioning train for Tauranga Jazz Festival where steam rides complete with onboard jazz band were on offer. This section of North Island Main Trunk skirts the maasive volcano Ruapehu 2797m at the boundary of Tongariro National Park which has 2 other active volcanoes.
