Why UPY? "Y" meaning yard?
@RL - Yes, the "Y" was added to designate units assigned to Yard service, but also to allow UP to maintain the US practice of having loco numbers with four digits or fewer. Big railroads like UP and BNSF are getting close to having 10,000 locos in service, and are running out of room to number them.
