Beautiful view! What is the purpose of the big door on the front of these power cars?

when built, the front end had two half doors, one opening to the right and the other to the left. When opnened, the EMUs could be interconnected and passenger/conductor could pass through a corridor. When the ICM EMS received a major overhaul some 5-10 years ago, the corridor equipment was removed and the two half doors replaced by a permanent cover plate.
