DC class was rebuilt between 1978 and 1983 from the DA class (EMD G12) and reclassified G22AR. The Metlink trains to and from Masterton on the Wairarapa Line pass through the 8,8 Km long Rimutaka tunnel and the locomotives must be specially fire suppression equipped.
