@LevPavliuk96 - Nice picture! In this case, the cropping of the picture as it appears above works well, but many vertical images do not work out so nicely. Nothing wrong with the picture, by any means, but verticals generally do not work well on the site.
@Maersk.146 thanks, I agree about cropping, I have enough railway photos with a vertical orientation and many previews will really look strange
thanks for the clarification, it's a pity that I can't upload even those that will look good on the preview

@LevPavliuk96 - Sure, I like the vertical format at times, as well, but find that I rarely shoot that way any more, preferring instead to just frame horizontally and cropping in post if desired. It’s a compromise, of course, but I’m old and must choose my battles more carefully
.

@LevPavliuk96 - Also, what I’m finding most pleasing these days is creating panoramic views with a 3:1 ratio for this thread. Not many participants so far, but I think the perspective is worthwhile.
Lev Pavliuk 96Oct 31, 2022mobile − edited Oct 31, 2022
@Maersk.146 I like your 3:1 photos, especially something like that picture with ambulance and pictures with bridges, it's not as common in railway photography as 16:9 or 4:3 which already looks pretty mundane. With regards to converting 4:3 to 3:4, this is a really good advantage of FF cameras with 30+ MP)

@Maersk.146 good photos, why not put the last 2 on the main page? There are not so many photos of trains running at night on trainspo yet
@LevPavliuk96 - Thanks, Lev, I suspect they'd be voted down due to bad lighting, but I might go ahead and try the middle one, since it shows better detail of the unit than the other pic (both are same train).
Lev Pavliuk 96Nov 5, 2022mobile
@Maersk.146 yes, the middle one is the best, just a little bit too much noise reduction, did you remove the noise via DXO?
No, it's with Photoshop CS5. I guess I'd better look at some tutorials on noise reduction. You're not the first to note that I use too much (and can tell exactly what I did). I generally do one NR application and one of Smart Sharpening, and they look "okay" to my untrained eye.
In these images, I think I was using a very high ISO, so there may not be much that can be done to smooth them out. I did just recently acquire Topaz Labs Photo AI, but have not had a chance to use it for sharpening and de-noising photos as yet.
Lev Pavliuk 96Nov 5, 2022mobile
@Maersk.146 oh, the noise reduction in the camera raw or photoshop is rather poor quality, try topaz denoise ai and dxo photolab, these are excellent noise reduction devices that, with proper skill, give a good picture for example on d750 and iso 12800, I have been using these programs for about a year, I managed to get a good result on the d7200 and iso 6400
@LevPavliuk96
Oh, that's good to know. I am looking forward to trying those topaz apps out in the near future.

@foxy
Very nice! Is there a lot of rail traffic here?
Rob Fox Jan 15, 2023mobile
@Maersk.146 it's busy stretch there. 4 tracks . With roughly every hour is 2 trains bristol to Cardiff and back , 1 from Westbury to Gloucester or Worcester , plus stopper into Bristol. Then you get 2 passing from the South West to the North or Scotland and vice versa.
There's a few freight trains too. But not many.
