This was the last Sunday-arriving #4 at Kansas City and Chicago due to recent cuts in Amtrak Long-Distance train service, which has been reduced to three-times-a-week from daily operation. Primarily because of Covid-19 and the drastic reduction of passenger travel, Amtrak has also furloughed many hundreds of workers across the country. After this day's run, #4 will arrive at KC and Chicago only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Service days for #3 will be similarly reduced. We can only hope that these services will be reinstated when travelers return to the rails in sufficient numbers, though Amtrak management has for some time degraded onboard service as a strategy to kill the long distance trains altogether. Covid-19 may just be an excuse to get there sooner than they had hoped would be possible.
