Pushing a coal train with extremely low tide in the background

storyPuget Sound, narrow long fjord-like inlet in Seattle area, features some of the world's most significant tidal ranges (differences between high and low tides).

When the tide is high, water will reach all the way to the stone wall carrying the railroad - typical scenery on majority of my photos taken here. When the tide is low, water will retreat for yards, revealing some of seabed to amusement of visitors and seagulls preying on shellfish.

Summer typically brings extremely low tides. Today's tide was one of the lowest in 2023, and beaches were overflown with people clamming, enjoying tide pools, and simply wandering on what is deep under water for the rest of the year. Interestingly enough, such extreme tides will often disrupt ferry services in the area: due to sever ramp incline, low-clearance cars and trucks with trailers will typically be banned on all sailings until the tide turns.
