@Kempy72 It is an unmanned DPU (Distributed Power Unit), and probably stays with the train for the entire trip, to theoretically reduce the possibility of broken knuckles or drawbars, by limiting slack action in the train.
Thanks. You see a bit of this on coal trains up in the NSW Hunter Valley, ore trains at Port Headland and electric loco hauled coal trains up in Central Queensland.
