170 tons - this number is the reason why the reconstructor of Tondi overpass in Tallinn, LEONHARD WEISS OÜ, asked Operail´s help to test the load-bearing capacity of the newly completed railway viaduct.
The load-bearing capacity of the new bridge was tested with our heaviest C36 locomotive, or "American", weighing as much as 180 tons at full weight. For two nights the locomotive was used both while idle and while moving. Although the official results of the test will be revealed within a month, it can be assumed from the test run that the load capacity of Tondi´s new railway crossing is as expected.
The new Tondi crossing is multi-level thus train and car traffic will be separated. This will ensure smoother movements within the city and eliminate the need for car drivers to wait for trains to pass. As a result, road safety will improve significantly for all parties involved.
