Yes, PKP still using SM48, however in my part of country it's almost impossible to see it with PKP Cargo's trains. Different situation is with private operators, which quite often appear in my neighborhood with this class. Except 'Pol-Miedz Trans' SM48 (or signed as TEM2) are using often by 'CTL Logistic' and 'Lotos Kolej' and some other companies.
I don't know exactly, but polish Wikiepdia told that in 2009y were about 390 machines. 109 in PKP Cargo (national operator) and the whole rest in private operators. As I observe, in my part of country (west Poland) there are only this privates and it's quite easy to catch them Also this class is popular at sand mine railways in Lower Silesia ( south Poland industry region).
Very nice I think it's good choice to looking for Tem2 in that part of Poland. Close to Wroclaw in Glogow, Legnica there you can find trains from Pol-Miedź Trans company (this is operator which is owned by big cuprum plant). They trains you can find in all west Poland. Also they using a lot of M62. If you have a time I recommend Leszno, there You find Romanian ST43 class (diesel engine) or Wolsztyn (about 100 km form Wrocław). In Wolsztyn You find steam engine museum and every day from Wolsztyn depo goes two pairs of passanger trains to Poznań hauling with normal gauge steam locomotive! however from Wroclaw You have to take whole day, because there is no straight connections, and you have to change train in Leszno.
Please write to: piotr.sternal@gazeta.pl I will response with pleasure for all your questions. I don't have MSN, because it's not popular in my country.
