The final train Wrexham and Shropshire ran was the 18:35 ex-Marylebone, bringing the curtain down on 30 months of through train service between North Wales, the Welsh Marches and London. The company had a 99% customer satisfaction rating but was unable to build sufficient passenger volumes. RIP
WSMR = The best open access operator by a wide margin using mk3 stock and locos instead of units. I suspect ATW and Chiltern being involved with DB Regio will be using the stock and 67's very soon for an extra WAG sponsored service to Cardiff or intenside Birmingham-London service with Chiltern to compete against Virgin. WSMR RIP indeed and a fitting photo to say farewell.
Thanks, it was a great shame that they couldn't generate enough traffic. I was amazed by the response from the general public. It really did seem as though the end of Wrexham & Shropshire was deeply felt by more than the rail fan community and the staff. There was a feature on the BBC R4 You and Yours on Friday. All very positive on a sad day. I'd traveled by W&S once, and their service was exemplary, but the train was very empty.
