In the 1970s the SBB-Brünigbahn started thinking about new locomotives, the FO needed new locomotives after the opening of the Furka Base Tunnel in 1982, so it was decided to built one class. Delivery in 1982/83 was three for FO and two for SBB, the latter transferred to FO in 1985/86 when the SBB series was built.
