The JA class was the last class of steam locomotive built by NZR (Hillside) up to 1956 or overseas (North British, 1951.) The class had short service lives due to dieselisation. Ja 1250 is a coal-burning Hillside engine whereas North British built Ja was oil-fired. The Glenbrrok Vintage Railway near Auckland operates between late October and early June. GVR workshop at Pukeoware undertakes complete loco overhaul.
