One of the oldest passenger trains of India , Grand Trunk Express, popularly known as GT was introduced by Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, with its headquarters in erstwhile Madras (now Chennai) in 1929,to run between Peshawar, then part of British India and capital of North West Frontier province in present day Pakistan and Mangalore, then part of Madras province, almost the entire length of the country and beyond. Peshwar to Mangalore took 104 hours. Later the destinations changed and now it runs between Chennai and New Delhi with 38 halts covering a distance of 2,186 km in 35 hours and 35 minutes hauled by a single WAP-7 class locomotive.
