Photographed when Armco was still a substantial force in the Kansas City area, KCS 718 South passes a string of Armco flat cars with loads of steel rods. These might be processed into wire rope or, perhaps, shaped and rolled into round balls called grinding media, used by cement producers and coal-fired powerplants to pulverize coal for generation of electricity. 25 years later, only a small part of this complex still exists. All of the taller buildings in the background of this view are gone.
