The DF class were built by GM in Canada and introduced from 1979. In 1990's were upgraded with turbo etc to GT22MC. Train 125 now only runs occasionally with the logs normally being conveyed on the overnight train 129. This scenic and rustic 200 Km line to NZ's most northern city traverses rugged terrain with steep grades and 13 tunnels. It has been under threat of closure for several years.
