Bilbao Subway L3 service Matiko-Kukullaga at Otxarkoaga station.

storyAfter 8 years of works and with 4 years of delays due to different reasons the 8th of April 2017 the 3rd line of Bilbao’s Underground was open. With a total length of 5.885 km and seven stations it has mean one of the most important openings in matters of mobility on the Basque Country. The line serves the high districts of the city of Bilbao, making a population of almost 50,000 people have this service within 5 minutes of their own homes. The stations, almost identical to those of lines 1 and 2, designed by Sir Norman Foster, join the urban environment of Matiko, Uribarri, Casco Viejo, Zurbaranbarri, Txurdinaga, Otxarkoaga and Extebarri neighborhoods, with only two differences in relation to the other two lines: the color of the station signaling, blue instead of orange, and the rail operator. For the first time EuskoTren would be the operator of an underground line in Bilbao, making real one of its wishes: approach its lines to the same city center of Bilbao and join the line of the Txorierri with the rest of the network, without any doubt a total revolution. The line will be served by the EMUs of 900 and 900 series, the most modern rolling stock of the company, and the only ones which could outpace the 40 ‰ track gradient that the line has on different points of the route. The works of the line have also allow for building the new 1,875 meter long Artxanda tunnel, which replaces the old one with single track and it’s the first step for the railway connection to the airport and, perhaps, the possible inclusion of the Txorierri line on the subway system.
Que pena que todas las líneas de vía estrecha tengan futuro menos las que dependen del gobierno central. Muy buena foto!
@alvarofdezg Gracias Álvaro! La verdad es que es una pena lo que están haciendo con la vía métrica en algunos lugares.
Great image and neat station! Must be fun to ride. Is there any fare to ride it?
@Maersk.146 Thank you! Yes, there are several tickets valid for Bilbao's underground system depending on your needs. The price of all of them depends on how many zones do you cross. Some of them are also valid for other means of transport. The main fares are:
- One way ticket: from 1,60€ to 1,90€.
- Barik (rechargeable contactless card 3€): from 0,90€ to 1,18€.
- Bidai 70/90/Oro (70/90/unlimited trip ticket): from 32€ to 93€.
- Anual26 (unlimited annual ticket only valid for young people under 26 yr.): from 229€ to 300€.
