Winding through the curves leaving North Kansas City, Amtrak #4 continues its detour over the BNSF Brookfield Subdivision, because at about 06:00 this morning a mixed freight train on the BNSF Marceline Sub scrambled up eight or nine cars on the Grand River bridge between Snyder and Bosworth, Missouri, eighty miles east northeast of Kansas City. Fortunately, the bridge was not severely damaged nor were there any injuries reported. Amtrak #4 is several hours late at this point of the detour since it had to wait for a route-qualified "pilot" from the unfamiliar territory to arrive for the ride to Bucklin, MO, where the Brookfield Sub meets up with the Marceline Sub and the train can resume its normal route. For the passengers, it means more time on the train and some less common route mileage to add to their trip logs. Also, missed connections at Chicago are part of the equation in some cases.
Appreciate your efforts in catching the Amtrak Southwest Chief, train 4, detour. Excellent write-up on why Amtrak was detoured. Keep up your fine efforts!
Man, we were headed to Baring that morning and happened to stop off at Bucklin to shoot the signal bridges right after dawn and heard the radio traffic about the derailment about 7 minutes after it happened. God we were pissed, but also glad we heard about the wreck before making it all the way up there and being met with absolutely zero eastbounds. We wound up chasing #4 from Sumner to Brookfield and chasing NS traffic back to KC.
