Crofton is home to the world's oldest working steam engine doing what they were originally built for, maintaining water levels in the Kennet and Avon Canal. There are two working beam engines at Crofton, a Boulton & Watt of 1812 and a Harveys of Hayle of 1846. Today water levels are routinely maintained by electric pumps, the steam engines are fired at weekends and on holidays by the charitable trust which owns and maintains them.
