Back in 1988, DRGW purchased SP/SSW and increased rail traffic over Tennessee Pass by utilizing the SP/DRGW/MP Central Corridor between Oakland, CA, and Kansas City, MO. As many as thirty train movements a day (including helper moves) were common, until 1996, when UP purchased all of DRGW/SP. By August 1997, this segment was considered surplus by UP and closed, though the track remains intact. We can only hope that traffic may someday warrant reopening the route.
