As Indian Railways strives to achieve 100% electrification in the next 4-5 years,diesel locomotives are gradually being phased out.To keep up with the requirement for electric locomotives,Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW)Varanasi and Diesel Locomotive modernisation Works(DLMW) Patiala,started producing High horse power WAP 7 locomotives.The First WAP 7 locomotive rolled out from DLW Varanasi in 2017.The Locomotive was named "Varun" and was allotted to Ghaziabad shed in Northern Railway zone
