Southern Pacific used old pieces of rail to mark their property line. They’re not very common any more but I found several along the old West Valley line. Now just a stub operated by California Northern, it used to extend from Tracy to Fresno, California. Passenger trains ran on this route until 1965.

1cctlivesI didn't even think to look, and I used to work as a land surveyor before I retired! 50 feet seems like a good estimate. I'm not sure how precise a job the railroad did putting them in though.
