Driving from Helper UT towards Flagstaff AZ, I was lucky enough to see a triangle of headlights in the distance. There aren't many trains from Moab, but I was lucky enough to catch the UMTRA local. UMTRA = Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action. It is a Department of Energy project to clean up uranium contaminated soil and water from between two national parks, and bordered by the Colorado River — the very same river that runs through the Grand Canyon and powers the Hoover Dam. Every day for the next 18 years a train will take loaded containers of contaminated tailings to Crescent Junction for disposal. Amazing project. Get in before 2028 if you want photos of this train!

Thanks for the welcome 🙂 It was quite a mission to get the shot; at 10am I arrived at the foot of Donner Pass with a heavy snowfall warning in place, but no snow to be seen. A few hours later I80 was down to a crawl (GPS asked if I wanted to switch to pedestrian mode!) and by the evening the whole pass was closed to all road traffic. The diligent work by the Truckee crews however meant trains kept running with nary a pause.

The following morning the skies were clear and the roads were open and made for some spectacular snow shoeing. It is true what they say about Donner Pass, the winter storms are quite legendary.

How things change. Since snapping this photo a devastating earthquake has covered much of this line, including this spot, in debris. It will be months and months before trains run here again. The highway is closed due to earthquake damage. The lead locomotive is now stored awaiting scrapping. Even the passenger carriages have been replaced with newly built ones.

First off, fantastic site and quite excellent presentation, a real joy to use.

A few features that I'd like to request:

1) On the main maps page (https://trainspo.com/map/), can we have an option for the OpenRailwayMap overlays, as on the map link from a photo page (e.g. https://trainspo.com/geo/2786733/ ). It is fun to explore 🙂

2) On the geo page (https://trainspo.com/geo/2786733/), is it possible to zoom out further? When you are in the middle of Russia it can be hard to see exactly where you are in the world and zooming out would be a nice touch.

3) A link to view a random photo. It is fun to just browse 🙂

I feel quite silly asking this, but how do I like a photo? I am logged in and verified, but no buttons or links come up?
