They are the connections for track circuits. Another interesting point is that since the up grading of signaling etc. The signal box that controlled the Bristol area which stood over to the left of the image where you can see a line of gray boxes has been taken over by a a signalling centre located some 70 miles away at Didcot and now controls a very large area.
