train arriving at the Split Mountain Quarry

US Gypsum operates the last narrow gauge industrial railroad in the United States. It is built to a gauge of 3 feet (914 mm) and is 26 miles long (41.8 km). It runs from Plaster City, California to the quarry in Ocotillo Wells.
Very interesting!
Also of interest is that this loco and three others were originally built by Bombardier in 1982 for White Pass & Yukon Rwy. in Alaska, but this one and two others were never delivered to WP&Y because of that railway's financial troubles at the time. For a while the three locos were kept in Canada, but in 1991 were sold to USG for this operation, two of which are still in use today. This is a marvelous addition to our database of the world's locomotives!
