That's precisely what they are, class 319s repurposed with a pair of MAN 520 h.p. underfloor diesels powering the existing traction motors. TfW are using them solely as DEMUs, other companies like Great Western and Northern, who have agreed to lease 769s, will use them as both EMUs and DEMUs, Great Western's will be tri-mode, DEMU, 25kV AC and 750v DC.
