It's part of the logo from the original Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad. The Union Pacific painted 6 engines in shcemes to honor old railroads they took over, The Denver and Rio Grande Western, the Western Pacific, the Missouri Pacific, the Chicago and North Western, the Southern Pacific, and this one.
