Manson's Siding bridge on North Island Main Trunk is about half way between Auckland and Wellington, near the Raurimu Spiral. The distant volcano is Mt Ruapehu 2797m, normally covered in snow. The 4-8-2 Ja class were in service until the end of regular steam in late 1971. This one is a coal-fired NZR Hillside built engine the North British built engines were oil-fired.

The green carriages were restored for the centenary of the North Island Main Trunk in 2008.
