The Makatote Viaduct at 79m high is the highest steel trestle in use by KiwiRail network trains and was completed in 1908, a year before the 684 Km North Island Main Trunk was completed between Auckland and Wellington. The green carriages were restored especially for Main Trunk Centennial Parliamentary Special in 2008. Ja 1271 4-8-2- was built at NZR Hillside, Dunedin about 1955-56.
