The Waitete Viaduct near Te Kuiti is 35m (115') high. Built in 1889 by Christchurch engineers J & A Anderson (who produced the first steam engine in NZ in 1857,) it is the oldest viaduct on the North Island Main Trunk. 4-8-2 steam loco Ja 1271 was built at NZR Hillside, Dunedin c. 1955.
