1431 was built by Clyde Engineering in NSW in 1957 for NZ Railways. It was sold to Steam Incorporated in 1988. Here it is seen leaving Waiouru with Ruapehu Express returning to Wellington from nearby ski town of Ohakune. Ruapehu 2797m (left) and conical Ngauruhoe 2291m (right) erupt from time to time and are the key attractions of Tongariro National Park.
