These were GE's answer to EMD's DDA40X double diesels, but the GE units were failures which had many problems. They lasted little more than six years before being retired and eventually scrapped. One issue not often noted is that it was difficult for crew members to climb on with their luggage since the walkways were at least a foot higher than most other diesels, and there was no safe place to ride on the steps while switching - today's American freight locos provide an inset step platform which prevents the crewmen from being brushed off by close-clearance obstructions. Still, as problematic as they were, they had a unique appearance which made seeing them a treat.
