RM 31 was built by NZ Railways Hutt Workshops in 1938 and named Tokomaru after a famous historic Maori canoe. After restoration by the Pahiatua Railcar Society it returned to mainline service in 2011. The railcar is making a run along the "mothballed" section of Wairarapa Line which has just 3 or 4 train movements like this a year hence rusted rails!
