The DF class were built by General Motors in Canada from 1979 and turbo upgraded to GT22MC in 1990's and classified DFT. All are being being overhauled and Brightstar equipped becoming DFB such as 7213. Assisting on this train serving Fonterra milk powder plant at Whareroa is an unidentified DC (EMD G22AR.) These trains formerly conveyed milk tank wagons which were often the entire consist but expansion of the Pahiatua plant near Palmerston North has seen this traffic diminish with many of the tank wagons laid up.
