The train has just exited the 8,8 Km long Rimutaka tunnel (longest in Southern hemisphere when opened in 1955.) This tunnel is among several that has strict safety compliance such as special fire suppression measures. The railway over the incline that operated from 1878 until 1955 is now a walking and cycling trail that starts just behind the train. The Fell center rail was used on the other side which had gradients of almost 8% with new brake blocks fitted on special brake vans for each trip.
