The two tracks leading off east, above the power, join at Congo Interlocking and make up the double-track main of ATSF's fabled TransCon. ATSF 5267 traveled across Missouri on the Gateway Western from East St. Louis, Illinois, which was previously owned by the Gulf Mobile and Ohio and, later, Illinois Central Gulf. Before the BNSF merger in 1996, this route was ATSF's first real opportunity to get into the St. Louis area. It was moderately successful, but the BNSF merger made it redundant and the service was dropped, the route being ultimately sold to the KCS.
