Eight years before this line was closed for gauge conversion. After that it was full of uncertainties. Even there was a plan to abandon this line as it passes through eco-sensitive areas and environmental ministry was not happy as railways submitted a new alignment which was not environmental friendly. Finally due to public pressure it was decided to lay the track in the old alignment as the British did. Then engineering challenges started slowing the work especially the bracketing of old MG bridges. Soil condition also was not favourable for the broad gauge. But determination overcame all hurdles but speed is still a factor which needs to be addressed. And finally on 31 March 2018, the first train from Tambaram - Kollam Jn - Tambaram ran on the track, much to the joy of the local population as Indian Railways connects people across cities, towns and villages. Hoping more trains will come in future in this picturesque route
