The DL class were built by CNR Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock in China from 2010 to 2014 with 3500Hp MTU motors. Reported to be the first order for diesel locomotives from a western railroad and the first new mainline locomotives for NZ in nearly 30 years, reflecting major investment by the government after buying back the rail freight business from Toll in 2008. In March 2014 the class was sidelined after the discovery of asbestos materials and after removal many of the locomotives required some repainting, as seen here, before re-entering service.
