AB 663 was retired by NZR in 1969 and purchased by Mainline Steam in 1983 who returned it to the mainline in 1997. 663 ran from Plimmerton depot to Pahiatua where there is a rail motor restoration depot and is seen returning to Wellington via Woodville Balloon loop allowing the locomotive to be turned. There is a 40 Km/h speed restriction running tender first.
