Hi Felipe,
Go ahead and upload a replacement version of the photo into the queue, with a note in the Description or Comment section for the new photo that it is a revision, and the moderators/screeners will take care of the exchange.
Thanks,

I have a question that might be a little stupid-Is the average speed of heavy-haul trains in the United States really very low? And sometimes the average speed is even below 40 km / h?
avatar
Maersk.146

@DF4B3110
The US has many routes for freight trains which allow for speeds up to 70 mph (112 kph). Some equipment is restricted to slower speeds, such as certain empty freight cars/wagons, but a lot of equipment is authorized for track speed.

hello, I have a question about adding a new class: in Ireland there is a company that belongs to two countries at once: the republics of Ireland and Great Britain, rolling stock is also assigned to different depots: 5 locomotives are assigned to Ireland, and 2 to Northern Ireland, they differ only the format of the number and the language in which the inscriptions are written, also all tail cars belong to northern Ireland. Q: How do I add Locomotives? create 2 companies under the British and Irish flag? Thank you

@LevPavliuk96 Hi there! Can you please share details about the class? Need some investigation to make a decision.

@ter Here is information about two companies operating on the island, Northern Ireland and Ireland

Thanks for the information, I would like to see exact class issue - I guess it's about 201 class, and yes we should use separate classes in this case IE 201 and NIR 201 (with 208/209 or 8208/8209).
avatar
stefan

It's probably regarding the Enterprise service?

Since it sure looks that way: Enterprise isn't the operator that runs those trains, it's just a brand name. IE and NIR (translink) are both responsible for rolling stock and personnel. They each own their own rolling stock, although IE is responsible for maintaining all loco's (including the NIR ones) and likewise the NIR takes care of all coaches. And although certain loco's have a certain livery, they can easily put 201's without the enterprise livery on the service. That's why once a while you can see and green/silver one of the enterprise service. It isn't preferable, but it happens once a while. You can compare it with Flixbus, where the normal passenger only sees the Flixbus brand, while there are other individual operators are responsible for busses and personel etc. Or with the ICE International between Amsterdam/Brussels and Germany: the dutch NS owns an ICE 3M set while the germans own a couple more. The passenger won't see the difference.

@ter thanks, in that case i added a photo of nir 201 but for some reason nir is under irish flag when it should be under uk flag
avatar
stefan

@LevPavliuk96 @ter the NIR's website is also wrong, it ought to be: www.translink.co.uk
avatar
Lev Pavliuk 96

@stefan yes, it looks like it's part of Irish Rail, there's definitely something wrong

Hi, I would like to add the rolling stock of the Bord Na Mona narrow gauge railway to the database, it has a lot of locomotive models, I counted about 20 in a couple of visits there, but it's all divided by manufacturer, you can almost always accurately determine the manufacturer, but not the model , since the model is not written on the nameplates, only number, it’s just like lm***.

So the question is: what is the best way to sign rolling stock? Sign something like "Bord na Mona LM/RM" or make it more precise like "Bord na Mona Wagonmaster"? I definitely won’t be able to add all the models, since even the workers themselves cannot always help me with identification, since almost the entire working fleet has been modernized several times. I would really like to figure this out and that my photos would not be in Identify for several years, I already have enough images and there will be even more, this is a really interesting system, the largest peat narrow-gauge railway in the world, I would like to share this on trainspo. I guarantee the quality of the photo😉. Thanks for understanding

Hello, the only way is to send an invitation upon registration, sometimes it can take longer.

Hi! The best way is to start with small portions 🙂 Like one new vehicle for the whole system so we will be able to describe it in the most correct way. Please also attach any detailed info about those vehicles, it can be any blogs posts or fan articles in case of missing wikipedia pages.

@ter https://locomotive.fandom.com/wiki/Bord_na_M%C3%B3na_%22Wagonmaster%22

https://locomotive.fandom.com/wiki/Bord_na_M%C3%B3na_LM400_Series

https://locomotive.fandom.com/wiki/Bord_na_M%C3%B3na_Ruston

https://www.bordnamonalivinghistory.ie/equipment-detail/locomot..80hp/

As you can see, there is a very clear division by manufacturers (classes), so it would probably be more logical to add several classes. I have also seen more detailed technical articles, but they talk more about peat extraction, there is not much information about locomotives on the Internet, because local railway fans show almost no interest in this. I think that few people even know approximately which networks are still working, I myself have to go to the systems and check whether there is traffic there or not, not to mention technical information about the locomotive

Dunno where else to put it, sooo..

ASR (Abellio Scotrail) was taken over by the Scottish government. Scotland had a wee problem with Abellio. So Abellio is totally out of the picture and it's just "Scotrail" 😉
avatar
Mikhail Ter

@stefan Thanks for info. Do you know the exact date of the takeover?
avatar
stefan

@ter
31 march 2022

Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ScotRail):
In December 2019, Transport Scotland announced Abellio had not met the performance criteria necessary to have its seven-year franchise extended for a further three years, and the franchise would conclude on 31 March 2022.

"Well lighted". For most people that seems to mean the sun is aimed in a way that either:
- in an angle that lits up the subject equally
- the camera was not aimed directly at the sun
- no shadows fall partially on the subject, creating contrasting spots where large parts of the subject are not well lighted

so basically:
- no places where the subject gets too dark for details to be less or not visible
- no contrasting sides of the subject where certain sides are either underlighted or are too light (basically: the sun in such an angle on side gets either too dark, or too light)

I've seen quite a few photo's of other photographers show up in the approval section and not ending up on the website because of this.

Now an editor has posted this:
"Well lighted does not mean that sun must be on the nose - it means that you can see the details of the subject being displayed. This picture completely satisfies that requirement. "
This was posted while he uploaded a photo with a slightly underlit nose, but a terribly overlighted side. Something that for many would be a sign of a bad lighted photo.

So following this editor's statement quite a few photo's that I've previously seen rejected by quite a few people should have gotten an oppertunity. Yet at that same time, this would mean quite a few crappy pictures should be allowed. And I thought the basic goal was to get decent, or good, quality pictures. Many here in Europe would say having unequally lit angles of a subject, a train, is a poor quality photo. In fact, many magazines here would simply press the delete button.

Summoning this down to one simple question: what are the real qualifications for a picture and what defines quality for this website?

How can I edit the loco class if someone suggests a correction? I need to change a 2M62 to a 2M62U. I tried clicking the "edit picture" link but it doesn't let me edit the text in the caption info.

Federico Santagati

@slamdunk Hello. If this is your picture and the class is already present (check on the operator), you can edit it by yourself. If the class is not present or it is not your picture, you can send a report with the "Send Report" button. The Trainspo Staff will then check your proposal and modifiy the picture info if necessary.
S

@Taurus717 - I did a "send report". I tried to update it myself but the Class appeared to be locked. There is some info in this Help Center that says that once a photo is submitted you can change all the info except the class and number, and you have to do a "send report" to change those.

Hello,

I have a question regarding the criteria for photo quality on this website, similar to what Stefan previously inquired about.

What are the actual qualifications for a picture, and how is quality defined here?

Many of my photos receive downvotes despite, in my opinion, having no apparent issues. Meanwhile, I notice recent photos that don't seem to meet the same standards and yet receive approvals. Some photos on the site barely show the vehicle but are still approved, whereas some of my detailed photos receive downvotes.

One example: https://trainspo.com/photo/150280/ - if i would post this under my account, it would never ever be approved. I could remotely understand if this is the only instance of the number, but is its not. There are two more, much better photos of this number.

This also very well illustrates my point: https://trainspo.com/photo/148399/

Or this: https://trainspo.com/photo/149824/ or even this: https://trainspo.com/photo/148576/

I can totally understand that the idea of this site is to keep the standards high and consistent, but makes this situation bitter is that those rules only seem to apply for some of us and actually there is no apparent consistency.

@tanelifoto @stefan

Moderation of photos is totally subjective in the eyes of each person participating, and though our site has guidelines for acceptable images, the preferences of individual photographers still manages to seep into the process, sometimes causing substantial inconsistencies. What makes a good photo to some is quite the opposite to others, and no list of ten general guidelines is going to satisfy the differences in some cases. For instance, MANY people like backlit, sidelit and high contrast images due to the drama these features add. Others prefer classic lighting where all details are equally lighted.

Trainspo is collecting good images of railroad vehicles from all over the globe, and there is room for a variety of lighting styles. Trainspo also has a shifting pool of member screeners who bring their own experiences and preferences to the process, and this can result in some photos sailing through moderation or getting stuck with some negative or DB votes, depending on which members are voting at the time. It is also true that once a picture has one negative vote that others are influenced by that vote and pile on, without really analyzing the picture with the site guidelines in mind.

The thing to remember is that the guidelines are simplified and limited in number to reduce the complexity of voting. Nobody wants to slog through twenty or thirty choices for each photo coming into the queue. Some vote-eligible members rarely bother to vote at all, even with the current minimal list of parameters. Maybe it would be possible for member screeners to view each picture as possibly good, even if it does not fit exactly with their own preferences for lighting, composition or subject matter, as long as it might be a useful or even stunning addition to the Trainspo collection, but does not seem to satisfy certain aspects of the list.

Overly harsh voting is one of the main reasons our site loses active members, and there have been many who have come and gone in the last ten years. Another reason is that, even though our site operates on Likes, not views, many photos that are nice never receive enough Likes to make it to the Main Page, let alone accumulate enough to receive a weekly award for Top Liked, Best Discoverer or Top Uploader. It takes very little time to add a Like to someone else's picture, and it costs absolutely nothing. This is a great community and can only get better with more member participation and interaction. Why not take the time to do so?

@Maersk.146

What made me post about this issue, was the situation with this image:

This made me feel bullied, the image though may not be perfect, is totally "ok" in my opinion lightning wise. The weather was overcast at the moment, the light is soft and even. But 3 members decided it was not "good enough" and to add salt on the wound, some totally random "vehicle is blocked or partially cut" votes, when it is not in no way.

It made me feel that there may be a "regional" preference on the photos, because as with many of my samples i sent on the post before, the photos that keep getting on the site besides the issues on their quality are mostly on the same region. And that is the reason why some of my photos get these unreal down-votes.
