Built in 1891, 7407 ft from sea level, highest station of IR
An UNESCO World Heritage site, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was built between 1879 and 1881. It is 88 kms long and is a 610 mm (2 ft) gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. DHR climbs 330 ft above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to 7407 ft above sea level at Ghum and then descends to 7200 ft above sea level at Darjeeling. DHR uses six zig zags and five loops to gain altitude. Steam-enthusiast specials are hauled by vintage British-built B-Class steam locomotives. The railway's headquarters are at Kurseong. DHR was built by Frankiln Prestage of Eastern Bengal Railway.
